Wood Treatments

One material – many possibilities

Wood is a wonderful, valuable natural material that can be used in many ways. To care for and refine wooden surfaces, a variety of treatment products can be applied. Below is a brief overview of the most common types of wood treatments.

Wax

When wood is waxed, a protective layer forms on the surface – similar to varnish – offering stronger protection than oil treatments. The wax partly penetrates the top layer and seals the wood. Visually, it gives furniture a silky sheen and enhances its color depth. A disadvantage is that hot objects like pots can melt the wax. Wax is usually made from plant-based ingredients, making it a more environmentally and health-conscious choice, just like oil.

Particularly suitable for:
Antique furniture and heavily used pieces

We recommend our Antik Wax for antique furniture and Liquid Wood Oil for all other waxed woods.

Oil

Oils penetrate the wood and protect it from the inside. Unlike varnish, oiled wood remains breathable. Oils may contain synthetic or natural ingredients and are generally eco-friendly and health-conscious. They are especially suitable for sensitive areas like kitchens, bedrooms, and children’s rooms. Oils enhance the natural appearance of wood and can intensify its color when combined with pigments.

Particularly suitable for:
Furniture with a natural look and for use in sensitive living areas

For oiled furniture, we recommend our Clear Wood Oil, enriched with sesame oil and high-quality medicinal white oil.

Varnish

Varnishes form a solid layer on the wood’s surface, offering strong protection from external influences. They consist of solvents, binders, oils, resins, pigments, fillers, and additives. Solvents ensure smooth drying and a glossy finish, while binders hold the formula together. The varnish seals the pores, protecting the surface from sunlight and mechanical stress.

Particularly suitable for:
Heavily used furniture for indoor and outdoor areas

To care for varnished surfaces, we recommend our Furniture Care Balm, which contains natural oils to maintain the flexibility of the varnish and prevent cracking.

Stain

Staining changes the wood’s color using chemical ingredients, but it does not offer any protection or care for the material.

For stained wood, we recommend our Liquid Wood Wax or Clear Wood Oil.

Glaze

Glazes are composed of similar ingredients to varnishes but are more transparent. They form a thinner layer and partially absorb into the upper wood layers, allowing the material to remain somewhat breathable.

Particularly suitable for:
Garden furniture

Lye

Wood is treated with lye to make it more visually resistant to sunlight, helping to prevent yellowing and fading. However, this treatment does not nourish or protect the material itself.

For lye-treated wood, we recommend our Liquid Wood Wax or Clear Wood Oil.
